Mountain Rose Vineyards Inc. is the first vineyard in Wise County Virginia and the dream of a young entrepreneur. David Lawson, part owner and wine maker, initiated his dream of owning his own vineyard when he was still in high school, starting the vineyard with one commercial acre of 80-year old concord grapes. David went on to Virginia Tech and Cornell University to gain experience and education in the winery and vineyard business. In 2004, the construction of the first winery of Southwest Virginia began in the heart of the coal-mining region of the Appalachian Mountains.
Virginia Wine Festivals and events are held at the Mountain Rose Vineyards and attract visitors year round. The new season is kicked off each year with the annual Wine maker’s Dinner during the late spring. Dinner guests are offered tastes of the newly released Virginia Wines. June denotes the Annual Shrub Rose Festival where more than 150 roses are in bloom, and select varieties are available for purchase. The summer festivities include the “Mines to Wines” Celebration, held in July, and Dinner Under the Stars, held in late August. Fall is a busy time for the Virginia Winery. Mountain Rose Vineyards offers several delightful Virginia Wine Festivals including the Concord Grape Festival, Fall Harvest Festival & Grape Stomp, and the Appalachian Quilt Show. The fall season is concluded with Tree Trimming festivities beginning in early December. In addition to Virginia Wine Festivals, be sure to learn about Virginia Bluegrass Festivals
and Virginia Museums
